If you are still reading this article, congratulations. Welcome to our blogging club! Without further ado, let’s get the ball rolling into step 1.

Step 1 – Choosing your preferred blogging platform

There are so many blogging platforms to choose from and it is pretty much the first thing you have to do. I am going to assume you already have heard of WordPress and that is the platform I strongly support. It is huge.

Basically, it is one of the biggest blogging platform in the world with millions of plugins and add-ons. Plus, there are so many ways to design your blog layout.

There are more than 82 million active users of WordPress, which is a lot, basically.

However, there are other alternatives that you can choose:

  • Blogger – the next best thing to WordPress.
  • Tumblr – Basically half social networking and half blog. It is an interesting combination.

While they are good picks, here are my reasons why you should still go with WordPress:

  • Very easy to set up and they are free to use.
  • Tons of free themes and layouts. (I am not joking, there’s so many themes to try!)
  • The forum support is massive and always ready to help if you get stuck or have issues.
  • Your blog will run insanely fast and it looks both functional and form.
  • People can interact with your posts and they can be shared, commented and so on.
  • You can build your own community who appreciate your content.

I wrote an article discussing about several different blogging platforms (including WordPress), feel free to check it out:

How to Choose a Blogging Platform: Ultimate Guide for Beginners

Now we have reached Step 2, we are moving fast!

Step 2 – Self-hosting or free alternative?

Whoa, slow down right there! This is the single most important decision you need to make before we go any further. You need to decide whether you should pay for your blog or use free services.

WordPress, Tumblr and Bloggers do offer free blogs for anyone. This is perfect for anyone who isn’t serious about blogging. However, there are some downsides:

1) You don’t get your own domain name

If you choose to use free alternatives, your blog website address (URL) will be super-ugly. Like really ugly that makes me want to put a paper brown bag on it. Essentially, free blogs with these free services will look something like this:

  • yourblog.wordpress.com
  • yourblog.blogspot.com
  • yourblog.tumblr.com

Very fugly, ugly, right?

2) Too many limitations

There are way too many limitations if you chose to use free blogs. You can’t take advantage of monetization and you definitely don’t have the ability to upload videos and images that you want to show to your audience. It is very limited. Even worse, you don’t have the access to free themes offered by WordPress.

3) You DO NOT OWN your blog

This does sounds a little silly, but you don’t own your blog. In fact, they are hosted by someone else’s web property and they can easily cut it if they chose to. They have done countless time in the past and will keep doing it in the future. Which means if you invest a lot of time on your blog, all of your hard work writing these blog posts will go poof in few seconds. Sad!

But however, a self-hosted blog on your own domain name – you are the real owner of your blog. You can do whatever the heck you want with your blog such as giving it a name. You even can end your domain extension with .com, .net or .org and basically any web suffix. Plus, you get unlimited bandwidth for images, videos and content in addition to use to free themes and you have a winning combo.

So, how much does hosting and a domain name cost? It is not that pricey as you thought. Typically, they go for around $5 to $10 a month depending on which hosting service provider you choose. I recommend Siteground if you want to build a blog on fast, stable and secure website.

If you do still have questions about starting your own blog on any of these blogging platform, I suggest you to check out my articles:

Step 3 – Start a blog on your own domain

I am going to go ahead based on assumption that you have decided to pick WordPress. If you haven’t, you should seriously consider pick WordPress. It’s the best.

If you aren’t sure what a self-hosted blog exactly is, allow me to explain and how you can set up one yourself.

You will need to create your own domain name and a hosting company that can host your websites.

  • Domain: The domain is basically the address of your website such as: Google.com and Facebook.com. See, very simple!
  • Hosting: Hosting is basically the company who puts your sites on the internet for everyone to see. Everything will be saved on it. Think of it like a computer on a hard driver around the internet where your blog will be saved.

Personally, I use Siteground for both my blog domain and hosting. I got nothing but plethora of great things to say about it. It is one of the most secure, reliable and fast hosting providers out of all. A domain name typically will cost you around $10 a year. But with Siteground, they add it for free as well as SSL certificate, built-in cache plugin and content delivery system. I use that providers for all of my blogs, including the one you are reading now.

If there is any reason you prefer not to go with Siteground, feel free to choose your own hosting company. Most of them should have an easy “one-click” WordPress install solution on their admin panel.

That feature will install WordPress on your blog for you. How easy is that!?

All you have to do is sign up with Siteground and choose your own hosting plan and domain name. Then you need to look for one-click WordPress installer on the admin panel.

Once you have WordPress installed on your website. All you have to do to start blogging is visit your WP-Admin page. Which is usually www.yourblogname.com/wp-admin and start writing new posts.

At first impression, the layout might look confusing but you will learn quickly. Don’t worry!

Step 4 – Styling your blog layout

Here is the fun part!

If you want to make your blog look how you want it to be. You need to choose a new theme which can be done by Apperance > Themes and install a free WordPress theme. Alternatively, you can go to ThemeForest and buy a premium theme for around $40.

Usually, I pick something that looks professional and is easy to customize. WordPress has an awesome feature that lets you switch themes with few clicks. If you ever get tired of your current blog template, you can switch to a different theme without losing your precious content.

Most importantly, your blog design style should directly say your personality and you. But it is also what the blog is about. There is no point in having a football-oriented theme if your blog is about tennis or baseball, makes sense right?

On the top of that, your blog needs to be very easy to navigate around if you want to keep people around. If it is too hard to navigate around, then people won’t stay for that long. Designing your blog style is a subjective art. Which means everyone likes different things.

But, nobody likes ugly websites and they hate websites that requires a master’s degree or Ph.D to navigate. My advice to you, make it very easy for your readers.
